COSA22.213 --- William Dalton

Hierzulande kennt man ihn nicht und auch in Großbritannien (und den Vereinigten Staaten) dürfte er indessen weitgehend vergessen sein. Die Rede ist von William Dalton (1821-1875) einem englischen Autor und Journalisten, der zeitweise als Chief Editor des Londoner Daily Telegraph tätig war, und zudem ab 1857 etliche einst auch publizistisch erfolgreiche Abenteuererzählungen für vorwiegend jugendliche Leser verfaßte. 

Als "Dreams of Adventure, Deeds of Empire" charakterisierte Martin Green 1980 in einer Studie treffend und pointiert diese Art von Büchern, die einem imperialen Weltbild huldigten und deren oft jugendliche Helden ihre Abenteuer in vielfach exotischen Ländern im Kampf mit der Wildnis und der eingeborenen Bevölkerung erlebten. 

In deutscher Bearbeitung sind mir nur zwei Titel Daltons bei Spamer (Der Tigerfürst, Lyu-Payo, der Wolfssohn) bekannt, eine Übersicht zu englischsprachigen Ausgaben erfolgt unten, wobei anzumerken ist, dass es sich bei den oben abbgebildeten Beispieltiteln oft um spätere Nachauflagen in anderen Verlagen handelt.
